It will be an exciting and busy season for James Sofronas. For starters, his team, Global Motorsports Group (www.gmgracing.com), will expand their racing efforts by campaigning two Porsche 911 GT3 Cup Cars and a recently acquired ex-Champion Racing Audi s4 Evo in the Speed World Challenge GT Series. He will also run a full season with Anchor Racing (www.anchorracing.com) while juggling his arrive and drive programs and private instructional courses.
Last year, James Sofronas impressed fans by out running some of the top factory supported teams in the Speed World Challenge series. As an underdog, he finished third in his No. 14 GMG/Porsche 911 GT3 Cup Car at Lime Rock out-qualifying and beating the factory Porsche teams. He also set the track record and took pole in his No. 92 Anchor Racing/BMW M3 at Mosport in the Grand-Am Cup GS class.
Off track, the thirty-seven year old is even busier. The Newport Beach, CA resident is a full time Sales Specialist for Getinge USA (manufacturing and sales healthcare organization). He is also President of Global Motorsports Group (GMG) which specializes in performance tuning and racing European cars. GMG is nestled in Orange County, California. During the holidays, I had the opportunity to chat with the passionate, energetic team owner.
Born to Race
Born and raised in Pound Ridge, N.Y., James and his older brother, Brad, have always shared a passion for cars. "My brother and I were always car fanatics," said James. "In New York, we finally got a chance to drive our own cars on a track after we met some local car guys who were doing driver schools at Pocono." After getting a taste of track time, the two were immediately hooked.
