Elkhart Lake, WI -- Chip Herr, of Lititz, Pa., grabbed the lead from polesitter Payton Wilson, of Gainesville, Va, going into turn one at the start of the Mazdaspeed Miata Cup Presented by Hankook Tires Atlantic Tour Round Six race at Road America and never looked back, winning his fourth Atlantic Tour race of the season.
Herr, driver of the No. 24 Warwick Autopart Performance Mazda Miata, slotted second on the grid, and passed Wilson entering turn one to grab the lead he would never relinquish. Herr and Wilson, driver of the No. 25 Warwick Autopart Performance Mazda Miata owned by Chip's father Chuck Herr, drafted off one another for most of the 7-lap, 28.336 mile race, finishing 2.039 seconds ahead in the end.
"Initially at the start we weren't sure how it was going to work with Payton," Chip Herr said about Wilson driving Chuck Herr's car. "It was his first time in the car and obviously he qualified really well. We went out together, bumped drafted, got some extra speed and that really helped out here today at Road America."
With the win, Herr extended his Atlantic Tour point lead, with 164, over second-place Shawn Dewey, with 129, and Niki Coello, 123.
Pacific Tour driver Izzy Sanchez, of Mountain View, Calif., driver of the No. 80 California Driving Adventures Mazda Miata, traveled to Road America looking for a good showing and came away satisfied with two third-place finishes.
