Forty-six Rolex Series teams headed to California Speedway early this week for the Ferrari Maserati 400, round three in the Rolex Series season. The promoter test day that was scheduled for Thursday, March 31 had to be cancelled due to high winds, so Friday was the first time that teams were able to get on track.
There were two practice sessions for the Rolex Series teams. The GT cars got on track first for 20 minutes in the morning before being joined by the Daytona Prototypes (DP). After an hour of combined practice, the DPs had the track to themselves for 20 minutes.
A second session in the afternoon was an hour long.
Daytona Prototype During the first practice session, the early pace-setter was the No. 01 CompUSA Chip Ganassi with Felix Sabates Lexus Riley of Luis Diaz and Scott Pruett. Their time of 1:34.696, however, was eclipsed by the No. 66 Krohn Racing/TRG Pontiac Riley of Jorg Bergmeister and Christian Fittipaldi. The 1:34.249 set by the team came with just five minutes left in the practice, and was the quickest time of the entire day.
The No. 01 Lexus went just a fraction of a second faster than the team's original fast time, turning a 1:34.518 to be second-quickest in the session.
Krohn Racing/TRG's second entry, the No. 67 Pontiac Riley shared by Tracy Krohn and Nic Jonsson, was third on the time sheet with a 1:34.619.
