Brandon Davis and Eric Curran share a laugh before the start of the race but it would be Curran who laughed last as Davis never got off the starting grid - Jim Bourn Photo
With five laps left the race seemed to be decided as Curran held a 1 second gap over the trio of Pobst, Galati and Archer with the Cadillacs of McCann and Pilgrim another half second back while Milner had fallen a half second back to get into the tussle with Whelen, Kubinski, Sofronas and Courtney. Everyone was tightly bunched but none of the leaders at least seemed destined to be moving anywhere.

The race then took on a vaguely reminiscent feel of Round 6 at Road America as within that battle behind the lead 6 all hell broke loose in turn 9 sending Sofronas and Milner spinning into the tires and Kubinski coasting into the pits.

Sofronas and Milner got moving again before the leaders came back around although Milner limped into the pits from whence he would never return and Sofronas only got down to pit out.

When the leaders thundered towards turn 9 they were greeted by a debris/oil flag and a large swath of oil which scattered Curran Pobst and Galati while Archer backed out of it and skated through unscathed.

After I got past Randy I concentrated on staying in position but when you are leading the debris flag isn't something you want to see with a couple of laps to go, said Curran of the end of the race. You always wonder how bad is it going to be and when I turned in you could see the oil on the track and the car slid some and I looked back and Randy went way wide and I was like, Oh, no'!

I don't know if my brain is not very quick or that white Corvette was blocking my view, those Vettes are really high in the back, but all of a sudden I see this black patch and the tire wall looks wrong and I am heading right for it and I am like Oh, no its oil', said Pobst of his late race scare! But I just did what I do when it is slippery I just held it steady and waited for it to hook up again and fortunately we all survived.

When we got into the oil I had a shot at him [Pobst] and I even got next to him but Tommy was behind me but I didn't know if Randy would slide across the track so I backed out of it, said Galati. I didn't want to take my own teammate out and have Tommy pass both of us! I wasn't sure so I backed off.
