Rolex Grand-Am GT Special Report - Bosch Engineering 250 GT Qualifying Report (April 24th, 2009) By Jim Bourn

"This is great, a Mazda front row." - VIR GT Pole Winner Nick Ham

Ham uses late burst to capture VIR GT pole

Qualifying for the Bosch Engineering 250 at VIR was a heated affair as near 90 degree air temperatures and a hot sun made the VIR asphalt sizzle but as hot as it was the Grand-Am GT teams didn't seem to notice the heat as the top 8 qualifiers broke Dominik Farnbacher's year old qualifying mark of 1:53.401.

Nick Ham, who languished at the deep end of the top ten for the beginning half of the session rallied to move up to fifth and then almost incredibly ripped off a 1:51.742 on his 8th lap to put the #70 castrol Syntec SpeedSource Mazda RX-8 on the GT pole.

"I had an epiphany," joked Nick Ham after moving from 5th to 1st very late in the VIR qualifying session. "My tires actually got better as the session went along and I got a clear lap where I really nailed all of the corners. I also got a draft from the Corvette down the front straight at the start of the lap and I picked up another draft from the other Corvette on the back straight which helped a little bit more because I got into the rev-limiter quicker than I had on any previous lap. So I got help with the draft but none of them held me up anywhere which was really kind of them."
