Grand-Am GT Tuesday - Sahlen's 6-Hour Special Edition - Part 1 (June 6, 2009) By Jim Bourn

Grand-Am GT at Watkins Glen - First half report

The Sahlen's Six Hours at the Glen got the green flag start under clear skies. Both the DP and GT fields got off to clean starts and the race ran green for the first hour of the six.

Robin Liddell blasted his #57 Stevenson Motorsports/Bryan Mark off the second row and led early followed by the Farnbacher Loles Porsches of Dirk Werner and Wolf Henzler in 2nd and 3rd.

Paul Edwards held form keeping his #07 Banner Racing Pontiac GXP.R right where he started in 4th position but first Jeff Segal got the # 69 Mazda past Edwards and then Dane Cameron, who had moved the #30 Marquis Jet/IPC/3Dimensional.com Mazda RX-8 first past Ham and then Edwards for 5thth as the opening laps sped past.

Later in the session the #57 Pontiac of Liddell started losing it's grip, pun intended, on the lead and started moving backwards as the Farnbacher Loles Porsches of Werner and Henzler that had started 1ns and 2nd took over the top two positions for the remainder of the first stint.

At this point Liddell reported that his car was totally loose and after fading back to 4th and steadily losing ground the #57 stopped for tires and adjustments in an attempt to stop the bleeding.

Conversely the #07 Pontiac was getting stronger as Edwards had stroked it early to save his tires and was closing on the leaders.

Late in the first hour the leaders started pitting under green.

After first round of stops Keen leads Henzler in the Farnbacher Loles Porsches with Edwards 3rd in the 07 Pontiac followed by the #57 Pontiac of Robin Liddell. The #70 Mazda of Trembley is 5th followed by Assentato in the sister Mazda #69. Ludwig is 7th in the #30 Racer's Edge Mazda RX-8 Wayne Nonnamaker, who has been strong all weekend thus far is 8th in the #43 Sahlen's Corvette with Spenser Pumpelly now in the #66 TRG Porsche in 9th.
