After a successful two-win season in 2011, Dean Copeland and Copeland Motorsports have upgraded their effort with an eye on the 2012 SCCA Pro Racing Playboy Mazda MX-5 Cup title and the Championship prize of a funded ride higher up the MAZDASPEED Motorsports Ladder.
Copeland scored back-to-back wins in 2011 at Lime Rock Park and Road America, two very different race tracks that proved his ability to win on both short, twisty circuits and high-speed, drafting layouts in the No. 7 Copeland Motorsports MX-5.
For 2012, the team has added a second car (with the seat still available for the right driver), upgraded the team's transporter to a 48 foot trailer, and added a year and a half of valuable experience to the independent team.
"You have to lose it before you can win it," Copeland said. "After last year, getting so close and not being able to have a better year-end finish, we are ready to go for it this year. It's time to hang it loose.
"We've learned a lot over the last couple of years, and I think we've made a step forward for this year. We've got a new look and a new car this year. We're looking forward to meeting and racing with all the new competition, and of course the veteran MX-5 Cup drivers at Sebring."
Copeland's first step toward the championship seat vacated by 2011 winner Michael Cooper comes in a doubleheader at Sebring International Raceway, March 14-16. Cooper's championship-winning prize places him in a Pirelli World Challenge Touring Car class MAZDASPEED3 for 2012, a path Copeland hopes to follow.
