The hottest car since the 'new' Beetle, and a darling of the automotive press since its introduction this spring, the hip new MINI Cooper S will be put to the real test in next year's US Touring Car Championship series. Ray Hampton Racing, based in Las Vegas, will campaign the supercharged four cylinder Cooper S model, making it the first team to utilize the MINI Cooper platform in a professional race series. RHR, originally committed to running the first two car team in the popular 'near stock' U.S. Touring Car series, is now ramping up to field a three car team. The MINI USA division of BMW N.A. confirmed today that the first car will ship this week to Rasmussen MINI of Portland, Oregon where it will be prepped for final delivery to RHR's shop in Las Vegas.
MINI Product Manager Kevin Philips states that "MINIUSA is excited to team up with Rasmussen MINI and Ray Hampton Racing to campaign the hot Cooper S in the US Touring Car Championship series." He goes on to say that "The blend of the MINI Cooper S platform, the Ray Hampton Racing team's experience, and the Rasmussen MINI support is a winning combination for the 2003 season."
RHR plans to have two identical Electric Blue MINI Cooper S on display and available for on-track evaluation by select motorsports journalists during the NASA race weekend October 26th and 27th at Las Vegas Motor Speedway on the outside roadcourse.
